Some christian friends of mine would argue the authenticity of this.
They'd say: "Yes, Judas was chosen to betray Jesus, yet he got a ticket to hell never the less." This is a paradox but not in violation with "truth". Only hard to comprehend with traditional human thinking. I'm inclined to believe that.

Well this is going to cause some controversy. It seems like all this type of thing (lost gospels) is coming up a lot lately. I think it may be because of the sucess of The Da Vinci Code (great book btw).

Hmmmm...I'm going to look mor into this, very very interesting; a revelation if it turns out to be authentic [spelling?]. Thanks for posting, very interesting.

Oh, I love contraversy, dont you? Heehee, I was actually reading that yesterday-of course it may not have been true (the manuscripts, not that they found them), but no one can prove otherwise...

Anyways, I've been a huge fan of the-leaky-cauldron.org for some time but since I finally built the courage to maintain a website of my own, I've been rather lacking in any new leaky updates. I only recently starting listening to Pottercast and I've got to say..it is quite brilliant. After searching through every link of the leakynews.com, I found that you are VERY involved with the site. I see you responding to nearly all the comments and even in the forums and having a life outside of Harry Potter. It's crazy. I don't know how you do it! I probably get 1hr of sleep a day but I still don't get as much work done as you seem to do. I give you major props. Thanks for such an amazing website and pottercast.

We knew that these documents existed. We didn't have any copies and they were "lost" because they were discounted as false by the early church, and most were destroyed. Gnostic texts are discussed in the New Testament by Paul and refuted.

It always baffles me that "revelations" like this are embraced so wholeheartedly and unquestioningly by the public, despite the fact that the canon gospels (which clearly contradict this new document, at least on the Judas issue)are all older and stand up far better to historical scrutiny than the gospel of Judas. Yes, the antiquity of this document has been confirmed, but that says nothing about the historicity of its contents.

Why is it that people seem so willing to dismiss the Bible as fantasy, and yet so quick to blindly jump on board with any of the (far less credible) spins on the life of Jesus that crop up?

The lost gospels don't get to me as much as Horus does. He was documented about...2,000 years before Jesus was even freaking born.

The facts that seem to escape those who 'defend' the canon Bible are specifically that the version that is 'official' at this point was pared down by a committee headed by Emperor Constantine of Rome and was particularly guided towards encouraging not only Roman citizens to embrace Christianity, but for Christians to embrace Roman society. It isn't so much purified as it is spin doctored to suit the reigning government of the time.

Can we steer clear of the DaVinci Code rhetoric?

Constantine did not create, nor spin-doctor the canon of “official” Gospels. From the second century on, according to all outward assertion and manuscript evidence, the four canon Gospels were already fixed, and there is plenty of evidence tracing the priority of these four Gospels further back through the first century.

By the time of Constantine, not only were the canonical Gospels fixed, but the rest of the canon was pretty much established as well. This is clearly shown by the two major codexes that we have from the fourth century. These are the two earliest close-to-complete Bibles, and they only have four Gospels in them, the four that we know as Matthew, Mark, Luke and John.

Actually, Chris, I didn't get this information about Constantine from The DaVinci Code, I learned it in my Western Civilization class last fall.
