Sometimes I'm lucky enough to find not one, but two hilarious stories in a day. The first is over this Pluto hubbub: Apparently we've named ourselves, as Earthlings, kings of the entire Solar System and have decided Pluto isn't a planet. Someone actually said, as they were walking around the newsroom today, "I feel bad for Pluto." Someone else said, "I'm pretty sure Pluto doesn't care." Not so! Read here! My favorite bits:
"First of all, it takes forever for me to do a lap around the Sun, and it gets really lonely out here. They tell me that part of the reason I'm not a planet anymore is that some of the time I sneak inside my buddy Neptune's orbit. What do they expect? I need somebody to talk to out here sometimes. And don't get me started about that mass of junk they call Charon that is supposedly my partner in non-planethood; Charon is dead to me."Awww, poor little Pluto! And then, then, this house in Utah has decided that it will display a lovely cactus on its front. Um. Yeah. A cactus. Tell me what this looks like to you! (Parental warning! Or not, because it's a cactus!)...So then those numbskulls on Earth finally figure out I'm here, and start calling me Pluto. I had mixed feelings; I liked Lex, but I also heard through the microwaves passing by that Pluto was a god of "Death" over there. I barely knew what "life" was, but I knew Death kicked life's butt all year long (and the years are really long here).
...
...So you can imagine how I'm taking this planet thing. Neptune, which used to hang out with me to try to look cool by association, won't even talk to me anymore."

Ahahahahaha... see! Planets really do have feelings too! LOL
Thanks Melis! :)
Oh and the cactus...woot! I'm number one!! LOL
-Lizzie :)
hehe poor pluto! "...I barely knew what life was, but i knew death kicked life's butt all year long (and the years are really long here)..." Oh, and I want a cactus like that ;-)
lol loving the cactus. Aww poor Pluto. i can no longer say that Pluto is my fave planet. What am i to no say its my fav ball of ice orbating Neptune?
Well you know how we Utahns are, we've got a reputation for thumbing our noses at society and society's 'rules.'
Down with The Man. And for the record, we still consider Pluto a planet and you can't convince us otherwise. :)
Wow. Just wow. I don't even know what to say. Apparently people also sent in hate mail to a planetarium when they said a year or two ago that they didn't consider Pluto a planet.
Yeah, that house definiely looks like it's giving the neighbors the finger.
I agree, poor little Pluto!! That article is super funny, though!
Ok that was the greatest thing ive read in a while. Poor little pluto! I feel bad for him, haha Lex, i liked that im gonna start calling pulto lex in conversation and jsut expect people to know what im talking about.
that picture made me laugh for like 10 minutes
Wow! I actually just read an e-mail from a friend informing me of the new 8 planets! Then I come here and you're talking about Pluto, I guess that's what everyone is talking about? hehe. That little Pluto article is hilarious!
I think it was last week that I read that they were going to make the description of planets too general. One scientist complained that we'd have about 35? planets. Now suddenly, they decide to make it tougher to be a planet? Wow, are we sure Percy isn't in charge of this committee?
"I liked to think of myself as Lex, except for a very brief period of experimentation and confusion when I thought I was Sophia. But that's a long story, and Uranus promised never to talk about it."
hahahaha!! Too funny! Poor Pluto!
Thanks for posting this, it brightened up my night!
Awwww poor Pluto. I think the whole things stupid! For 12 years I've had the solar system drilled into my head, (not literally) and now I have to remember we have 8 frickin planets! WTF?!?! Why couldnt they leave it alone! Poor pluto!
And LMAO at the cactus! I want one!
Andy
Yeah, I heard about that in the papers today. Pretty funny.
What?!? Pluto is no longer a planet? But...but...in first grade we learned the planet song and Pluto was definitely there! Now how will that song end for future generations! How sad :(
LOL at the Utah cactus
Well, um, I did a report on Pluto last year in Astronomy. That's about the same thing I got.
As for the cactus, I couldn't see one..... maybe I should get my glasses on....
oh, and we from Rowlingcast would love you on the show some time. We're just getting started with it. You guys inspired us during Lumos 2006 while we were doing "Mini Lumos" (quite a few of us couldn't go to Vegas or NY, so we skypechatted).
Lol that is so funny
HAHAHA!! That's hilarious.
Oh Melissa I love how your the voice of reason when it comes to weird things in the news; potter and non-potter.
I said this over at Leaky, but I'll venture forth again. We should make a club... call it "Save Pluto Earth Wizards". We can get a tin, and pass it around, and make buttons to sell, and have meetings and discuss poor Pluto and its moons...
Wait. I guess that SPEW has already been taken. Darn. I wonder if Doopy and Sneezy are as confused by the dwarf planet issue as I am...
Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune..... and Pluto, hehe.
There's a time when you have to sit back and think: "Is Mother Nature trying to tell us something?"
xx.
Poor pluto! It may be a dwarth but it will forever be a planet in my heart.
here's a gallery of pluto "Supporters"
NOTE: These were made with photoshop! They're not real, and they weren't made by me.

The cactus is strange...and very funny that you put the *parental advisor* up for it! HA! Seriously, I don't really see it as "the bird"...I see it more as looking like a fat crayon drawing of a city skyline. Am I way off base with that?
As for Pluto...well, if Pluto's out, what about Planet "X" that's supposedly behind it. I mean, Pluto is sad enough...now there's potential other Milky Way "fall-out" that will happen in Pluto's "fall from grace". Very sad, really...very sad. ;-)
i felt bad for poor Pluto when i first heard the news. :(
and that cactus is just LOL :)
You know, I do feel bad for Pluto! Planets do have feelings! That is hilarious.
As for that house, hahahahha I want that cactus! I would just die if I saw that in person.
Love, Amanda
Who the crap would want to display a cactus on their house?
I'd RATHER display "the finger" eh?
I'm stealing that cactus.
i really am sorry for Pluto. He who has always been of our Solar System, now they the big sciencists say he is not big enough for being a planet! ...it is some stupid..
i like your web!
kisses
Hey I took a test in Geography today and one of the questions was which planet is no longer a planet? and i was like wow!!!! Melissa taught me this! lol
Wonderful article, poor Pluto. That's something you should mention on PotterCast, which I'm a huge fan of by the way. Anyway, great blog and a funny article.
I'm a huge fan and I think you are great.
