I just lost my entire hard drive. I mean, I knew it was going to happen. I dropped the computer (shh, don't tell Apple, not like they care). This happened once before and in 24 hours after it did, I got the white screen of doom. So, once it crashed to the floor this time, I ran and backed up all the important stuff that makes my life work. And it's a good thing, because unlike last time, my hard drive was affected. It's gone. I have a new slate computer here.
The book was backed up. Every day I thank the sweet lord above I did that. And everything truly important - my important documents and movies and pictures and music - all that stuff lives on a backup drive instead of my computer anyway. But there are an uncountable amount of little things that I didn't have backed up, like my giant to do lists on my sticky notes, or some raw footage from my video camera, or my IM conversations from FOREVER. I did a massive backup once, that just copied my entire drive; since then it's been on an as-needed basis, always thinking, "This is just a precaution, I won't lose my hard drive."
YES. YOU. WILL.
BACK. UP. YOUR. STUFF.

This is odd timing. The past week a lot of online people have lost data and blogged with the same message as you. Yesterday I signed up for Mozy, and now my data is in the process of being backed up online.
But at this point I kind of feel Jynxed.
I feel with you for your loss of irreplacable data.
OUCH!!!!
Sorry to hear that, just remember, It could have been worse.
Love, Nino & Joseph
Oh my gosh. I'm so sorry Melis! Thank god you saved the book. And now I'm off to go back up my computer again on my external drive.

Dang girl- that sucks.... Good that you had most of it backed up- mine crashed a year or two ago and I lost literally everything- writing stuff, emails, etc.
I actually bought an external hard drive this weekend and backed up my entire computer. I have lost my work computer before... That's a pain in the butt.
Good luck getting everything back!
Oh how awful! I think I'm going to back computer up right now!
Good luck with your computer!

I had to send my computer to get fixed a few months ago because it shut off and wouldn't turn back on, and when I got it back everything was gone. D: Since then I've backed everything up. It's the worst feeling when everything gets erased.
Ah yes, words of wisdom. Just don't do what I did and buy an external hard drive, back up your stuff, and then proceed to drop said external hard drive. I got lucky, my external drive still functions. Throughout my blog tho, there are instances of data loss... oops.
Ouch. Really sorry about that. Once my iPod (which is unhealthily important to me) was dropped- into a deep puddle of water. It was basically dead, but luckily my iTunes library held all the stuff and I was able to get a new iPod. I'm glad it worked out all right for you, though it is a bummer that you lost all the little stuff.
:O That totally sucks! I'm so sorry and I feel your pain. That sucks so bad!!!! Sorry. Wish we could help. =(
I'm so sorry Melissa; after all, some of the little things are the best :( Although, it really is great your book was saved, I could not image the pain you would have to go through! PS: Thanks for mentioning 'His Dark Materials' so many times on PC, you've converted me into a fan!
Thank god you saved all your stuff and backed it up! I don't put a ton of stuff on my computer but i always back it up with a CD or a USB drive.
thanks much for that reminder. seriously. i just remembered that i should do that...
Woah.
Advice taken.
Sorry about your computer, but I'm glad you didn't lose your book!
Also, I thought of a good question for you the other day. Why did you decide to leave the Staten Island Advance, and now that you've quit, what are your plans for the future?
